What is Future Ready?

In short, a Future Ready School (FRS) has taken an official pledge with the Alliance for Excellent Education to make preparing students for college, work and citizenship a top priority and to let that priority steer all future decisions and endeavors.  In addition, an FRS recognizes the importance of technology and digital literacy in preparing students for the future.

The Origin of Future Ready Schools:

In November of 2014, President Obama invited over 100 superintendents from across the country to a meeting called ConnectEd to the Future held in the East Room of the White House.  These superintendents represented some of the top performing schools in the nation and were recognized for leading their districts in a transition to digital learning.  At this meeting, superintendents shared ideas on how they had made this transition.  At the time, fewer than 30% of classrooms had the broadband internet to support today's education technology needs.  These superintendents recognized the role that technology would play in preparing for students for the future.  The Future Ready Schools initiative was born from this meeting.  The superintendents at this meeting were the first to sign the official Future Ready Schools pledge.

The Future Ready Schools initiative is currently run by the Alliance for Excellent Education in Washington, DC.  The initiative asks district leaders to commit to fostering and leading a culture of digital learning in their school districts.  Superintendents who take the pledge are demonstrating their "commitment to work collaboratively with key district stakeholders to set a vision for digital learning, to empower educators through personalized professional learning, and to mentor other district leaders in their own transition to digital learning" (Office of Educational Technology).  By taking the pledge, our superintendent has made a promise that he will lead and support us in our endeavors to leverage technology where necessary to personalize student learning in order to best prepare students for the future.
