Charging

Are you having issues with your Chromebook charging?

Here are some things you might check:

1.  Make sure that the outlet, power strip or extension cord is working.
2.  Make sure the connection between the two parts of the charger is solidly connected.
3.  Make sure the charger is completely plugged into the charging port.  The charging light should turn orange or white.

If these did not help, you may have an issue with your charger, or it may be your Chromebook.  Let's find out.

What happens when you plug your charger into the charger port?

If the charging light blinks orange, you may have a battery issue.  This means that the battery can no longer hold a charge.  But, the blinking orange light can also mean that your Chromebook is at a dangerously low level of charge (less than 5%).  Please leave it on the charger for about 30 minutes to esnure that this is not the case.  If you're Chromebook still has not charged after 30 minutes and the light is still blinking orange or has gone out, please see Step 2 on the Student Tech Help Desk homepage to request assistance.

If the charging/power light does not come on at all, there is possibly an issue with your charger.  Please see Step 2 on the Student Tech Help Desk homepage to request assistance.  When you bring your Chromebook to the library for assistance, please also have your charger.

If the charging light does not turn orange AND you don't get a white power light when the charger is plugged in, the Chromebook possibly has a motherboard issue.   Please see Step 2 on the Student Tech Help Desk homepage to request assistance.  When you bring your Chromebook to the library for assistance, please also have your charger.

If a Chromebook is COMPLETELY drained of charge, it may take several minutes on a charger before it will do anything (power on, etc).  Please be certain to give ample time on the charger to ensure that the battery is no longer charging.

Once you plug in a charger, you can also do a hard reset to make sure the Chromebook is not in hibernation.

When Chromebooks are in hibernation, they don't power on, and they also don't charge.  To do a hard reset, press the Refresh and Power Button at the same time.  If it was in hibernation, the charging/power light will come on, and the Chromebook will boot up.  If it was not in hibernation, nothing will happen, and this Chromebook needs repair.

What if my charger won't stay plugged into the charging port?

This means that your charging port has been damaged.  The port can become damaged in one of two ways, or both.  If someone tripped on the charging cord while it was plugged into the Chromebook, this can damage the port.  Second, if the charing cord is yanked out on a regular basis to unplug it from the Chromebook, over time, it can damage the port's ability to hold the charger.

Please refer to Step 2 on the Student Help Desk Homepage to request assistance for repair.  Since this is damage, there will be the $20 Damage Fee assessed to repair the Chromebook.
