Assessments

Below is a list of the different assessments that students can expect to take over the course of their high school career. Student test scores are an important component, along with class rank and GPA, of the college admissions process. On some tests, such as the ACT and SAT, students may need to take it more than once to improve their scores. Colleges and universities will normally take the best scores received if a student takes a test more than once.

END of COURSE EXAMS (EOC):

Students taking the following courses will take End of Course Examinations in that content area. These exams replace the MAP test at the high school level. Assessments included are: Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Communication Arts I & II, American Government, American History, and Biology.

PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test)

This is a standardized test that measures critical reading skills, math problem-solving skills, and writing skills. This test provides valuable feedback on a student’s academic strengths and weaknesses, thus allowing the student to better focus his or her attention on these areas. Students who score in the 99th percentile on the PSAT become semi-finalists, and then take the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). Scholarships are awarded to the 4,000 semi-finalists who score well on the ACT.
