                         SIP Overview

The Student Improvement Program (SIP) addresses appropriate school behavior.  The assigned side of the room is similar to an in-school suspension.  The difference is that a helping network consisting of the principal, classroom teacher, counselor and SIP coordinator meet and have a follow-up plan to help the student make better choices to avoid further assignments to SIP and be successful at school.  There are generally 3 parent contacts made per assignment to SIP:  the first from the principal informing the parent of the assignment, the second from the SIP coordinator informing the parent of the follow-up plan, and the third from whoever did the follow-up visits to let the parent know how they went.  The SIP room is additionally used for time-outs.  SIP also has a preventive aspect of the program.  Students that are having social/emotional adjustment difficulties are set up on personal goals by the helping network.  When the student meets those goals they earn a good visit on the preventive side of the room.  The SIP coordinator also conducts social skills groups, where small groups of students discuss appropriate ways to handle certain social situations with which they may be having difficulties.

SIP has helped students be successful in a postive, safe learning environment.  Parent involvement is essential in the success of the program.  On Mondays, students that earn good visits phone home sharing the good news of the day.
